Wikipedia list article the personnel of the english rock group pink floyd has changed several times. The group was founded in 1965 by syd barrett on guitar and lead vocals, nick mason on drums, roger waters on bass and vocals, and richard wright on keyboards and vocals. Guitarist and vocalist david gilmour joined in december 1967; barrett was ousted from the band in april 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. From the 1970s onwards, they were augmented by additional personnel in the studio and on stage. Following creative tensions, wright left pink floyd in 1979, followed by waters in 1985. Wright rejoined as a session musician and, later, band member. Mason is the only member to appear on all studio releases.
Formed in 1965, the band went through several name changes before combining the first names of a pair of carolina bluesmen, pink anderson and floyd council. Their initial direction came from vocalist-guitarist-songwriter barrett, whose mixture of blues , music hall styles, lewis carroll references, and dissonant psychedelia established the band as a cornerstone of the british underground scene. They signed with emi and early in 1967 had their first british hit with the controversial “arnold layne,†a song about a transvestite. This was followed by their debut album, the piper at the gates of dawn , a lush, experimental record that has since become a rock classic. Their sound was becoming increasingly adventurous, incorporating sound effects, spacy guitar and keyboards, and extended improvisation such as “interstellar overdrive. â€.
Youtube pink floyd is one of the few bands in which all of its core members released solo albums, either as side projects while still in the group or after leaving the fold. Keyboardist richard wright made three albums on his own: wet dream in 1978, identity in 1984, and broken china in 1996. The latter, like several of pink floyd's lps, is a concept album, with every song revolving around a common theme. Sadly, that theme is the clinical depression suffered for years by wright's wife, millie. "it was, of course, a very frightening and very emotional time, to witness this happening," the musician told the boston globe. Initially, he planned on an instrumental project but realized that his songs had an air of sadness to them. "a lot of the things i write would be melancholic, and melancholic is an emotion that is certainly about sadness. ".
Photo: mike cecchini pink floyd fans attending the nick mason’s saucerful of secrets concert at new york city’s beacon theater got an unexpected surprise on thursday night, when another founding member of the legendary psychedelic rock band appeared on stage: roger waters. Waters, who was pink floyd’s bassist, vocalist, and one of the band’s chief songwriters during its first 20 years, rarely makes guest appearances at other floyd side projects, but joined mason’s new band to provide vocals (and gong) on “set the controls for the heart of the sun†from 1968.
Pink floyd 's next album, atom heart mother , featured extensive contributions from composer ron geesin and wound up as the band's first number one album in the u. K. The band embarked on an extensive supporting tour for the album and when they returned they delved even further into studio experimentation, learning the contours of the studio. Their next studio album, 1971's meddle , bore the fruit of this labor, as did 1972's obscured by clouds , which was effectively a soundtrack to barbet schroeder 's film la vallee. All the experiments of the early '70s were consolidated on their 1973 album dark side of the moon , an album for which there simply was no precedent in their catalog. Deepening their music while sharpening their songwriting, floyd created a complex, luxurious album with infinite space and depth. Partially helped by the single "money," it was an immediate success, reaching number one on the u. S. Billboard charts and peaking at number two in the u. K. , but what was striking was its longevity. Dark side of the moon found space on the billboard charts and then it just stayed there, week after week for years -- a total of 741 weeks in all (once it finally dropped off the charts, billboard began the catalog charts, where dark side was a fixture as well). Dark side of the moon was a staple on classic rock radio but it also was a rite of passage, an album passed down to teenagers when they were turning to serious music, and it was an album that stayed with listeners as they aged.
Michael putland/getty images the reason the hysteria over the david gilmour mansion is that david gilmour does not, in fact, own the house. Nor, as nme put it, do the images "suggest that the pink floyd vocalist just abandoned the home on a whim," because, as the now archived hookend studio's webpage describes, the pink floyd vocalist had previously sold hook end manor to west side productions, producers of madness and morrissey , who then sold it to trevor horn, the creator of the studio, in the nineties.

The presenter visits west end record shops that openly sell bootlegs and interviews the manager of virgin records who cheerfully talks about how he sells illegal records that he’s bought from shady suppliers in cash-only, no invoice deals – those were the days, eh? he also meets the bootleg king, who claims to have been given the nod of approval by pink floyd ‘s manager – the band and said manager then pop up to deny this and listen, aghast (or as aghast as the floyd ever got) to a snippet from the album pinky, which frankly doesn’t sound that bad. Of course, we know that nods, winks and backhanders were common between bands and bootleggers, but no one was ever going to admit that on camera, were they?.
