Their respective musicianship, demeanor and intellectually progressive style is second to none, in my opinion, and makes them, again in my opinion, the best three piece rock band ever. As a drummer, philosopher and appreciator of unique and interesting personalities, i have appreciated neil peart in various capacities for some time. As an undergraduate philosophy student (presently working on my ph. D. ) we were assigned in senior seminar to write about our favorite living philosopher. I turned in a twenty page treatise on neil peart and the look on my professors face was priceless. Without reading it, he handed it back and told me to grow up and do the assignment, stating "he's not even an academic. How could he be a philosopher?" (such attitudes are commonplace) i told him that if he didn't think differently after reading it i would quit school. He could tell i was serious. The next day, handing me a paper with the first letter of our alphabet scribed widely across the top, he asked me, embarrassed, if i would burn him a cd with "some of their stuff" :-).

#1,108 here is my two cents about neil peart. He's one of the best rock drummers ever. I give him a 10 on drums. Good lyric writer, too. I don't think he's overrated. There are better drummers out there than him, but he was real unique and special. Peart was good on the cowbell, ride, 16th notes high hat stuff, odd time, really good double bass, good on the cymbals, some fast, proggy/fusiony fills. Good on the snare with snare rolls. Really good soloist, too. I don't care for the electronic drums on his kit. His drum solo on the exit stage left live album is probably one of the best drum solos ever, in my opinion. The only knock on him would be that he's not really that funky or soulful or swinging and a lot of his drum parts were too rehearsed and perfect. I don't think he would have fit in any other rock band. He was perfect for rush, like moon was perfect for the who. I also never liked the sound of his dw kits. It sounded too wimpy. His two old slingerland kits in the 70's and his first tama superstar kit sounded better. Peart was kind of like eddie van halen. You were just waiting for the next wacky, impossible part they could pull off.

Over the years my opinion of rush has gone from good to not great and back to good again depending on what they had last put out. Overall i think they are an impressive band-both from technical player perspective and from an artistic merit perspective-but that doesn't mean they don't have their foibles. For me the track they did that most got under my skin was 'losing it' from signals which i think is an otherwise great album. The song 'losing it' is about people who lose their ability to do the creative thing that they have decided to pursue as if being a creative person was a situation with only two variables-all in or all out. Lots of things can cause a person to not do something they are good at-encountering bad people in whatever area they are into is the big one but the song doesn't reflect that. I have heard rush fans comment that they didn't like the fashion phase that band when through in the mid 80's adopting short haircuts mostly-i agree-the boy scout look didn't look great on them. Anyway better to have them around than not. This album is one of their best-mostly-and it sells for next to nothing online unlike the prices for most cds in the big stores.
