Professional potters first began settling in seagrove more than 200 years ago. Approximately 100 pottery studios now dot the area’s landscape, which encompasses parts of randolph, moore and montgomery counties. He plans to spend summer 2010 making 100 consecutive jars, all of which will be for sale at the end of the season. I lived in austin for years and knew of the "hi, how are you" mural there on the drag but i never knew the story of daniel johnston until watching this documentary. It was an interesting film and you can easily hear the talent in daniel (well, as long as you're open-minded to his lo-fi style). He's often compared to brian wilson, as he is at the end of this film, because they are both talented musicians who struggle with mental illness. Their styles are different and brian was surrounded by more talented musicians and people supportive of his art. While daniel's parents clearly love him very much, they are very religious and condemned his art when he was growing up. This forcing of religion upon him seems to have led to many of the issues daniel still struggles with today through his bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It reminded me a little of religious serial killer profile movies like seven. Thankfully, daniel expressed most of his thoughts and struggles through music and drawings rather than violence (with the exception of hitting his manager with a pipe once).
