Documentaries have been made, reviews have been written and cult status has been established for the outsider musician daniel johnston. Surprisingly, no photobook of johnston's life and times has ever been put together. That may be about to change. Brooklyn-based photographer jung kim has been photographing johnston for four years and is now raising crowdfunds to get a photobook made of the work and an accompanying traveling exhibition on the road.
During the past two decades, daniel johnston mug daniel johnston fan mug musician daniel johnston mug has achieved international recognition as an important american cult/outsider/alternative musician/artist. Accompanying this has always been the dark side: he is a singer-songwriter with a history of mental problems that on occasion have led to violence. Many respect him for his gifts, but to some he is simply a creative naïf lacking substance; others label him a no-talent celebrated by so many out of perversity (some combination of liberal love for the impaired and an act of violence against the culture right out of ayn rand). None of the views is exactly on target, but because it is johnston, each also is in some way. Even though much has been written about him, little has captured this expansively complex and contradictory person.
(22 january 1961 - 11 september 2019, usa) 'space ducks - an infinite comic book of musical greatness'. Daniel johnston was one of the best known "outsider" musicians, artists whose performances lack professionalism, but are interesting in their authenticity and oddness. In johnston's case his mental instability stemmed from schizophrenia and manic depression, which occasionally affected his performances, tours as well as his and other people's safety. Yet compared with many amateur musicians he was actually a very capable guitarist and pianist. His lyrics are touching and he has an ear for writing catchy melodies. It explains why he was one of the few to make a career out of it. Johnston gained a cult following in the 1980s, which grew significantly over the decades. Many alternative musicians and rock bands have praised him and covered his work. Along with lucia pamela johnston is also one of two outsider musicians who once made a comic book. Most were scribbled inside his personal diaries, but in 2012 he published a full-length comic book: 'space ducks'.

Real score: 4 stars score adjusted to account for amazon users getting it wrong: 4 stars (unchanged) the devil and daniel johnston is a documentary that even the uninitiated into the world of this influential outsider artist and musician would appreciate, in part because it is such a strange story, but also because its reputation as a wonderful film precedes it. It is often cited amongst rockumentary fans as a highlight of the sub-genre, and i’ve been looking forward to seeing it for some time. It certainly does not disappoint. Daniel johnston’s life would be interesting if you were to read it from a completely detached and objective source, like his wikipedia page, so to present it in such an imaginative, sprawling and creative way is great.

Earlier this year, beloved and prolific songwriter, daniel johnston, suddenly passed away in his home. On what would have been his 59th birthday, join us in celebrating his life with a screening of the 2005 documentary: the devil and daniel johnston. The film explores johnston’s complex artistry and how bipolar disorder and schizophrenia influenced his work.
Any discussion of daniel johnston 's music is usually prefaced with a mention of his bipolar disorder. That can overshadow the impact of the uncomfortably fragile, eerie, bare-bones chord-organ songs he's recorded for the past three decades, but it can't necessarily explain them. True, his condition has been a lifelong struggle that's only recently gotten under control—his struggles were chronicled in the 2005 documentary the devil and daniel johnston—but the singer-songwriter has built a career around perseverance in spite of absurdly incredible odds: he forced his way onto a 1985 mtv special in austin, survived a self-inflicted plane crash after playing south by southwest in 1990, and has released a dozen albums since. Before johnston came to town, the a. V. Club spoke to him about whether his condition gets more attention than his music, why his documentary is actually a comedy, and what he spends his money on.

Review by evan “kaizŠhaya-shill†pincus ★ 24 daniel johnston was not a misunderstood genius. This documentary proves that he was, in fact, a very well-understood one, surrounded by people who saw his (frankly, practically peerless) talent and alternately strived to get him the help he needed and actively enabled his darkest periods. The devil and daniel johnston is in a precarious position as a profile of perhaps the best-known so-called “outsider musician,†perfectly poised to deflate the idiot-savant notions behind that dangerously ableist and classist category, with unprecedented access to footage, friends and family. There was potential here for something that really created important discourse, something that showcased johnston’s brilliant songwriting and illustration while simultaneously striving to dismantle these toxic conceptions of what his (and so many….

I. The insider’s desirous gaze some would try for fame and glory; others aren’t so bold. —daniel johnston, “story of an artist†we attend concerts for many reasons, and in the more obscure corners of pop music, we may worship artists because of peculiar factors. If pressed, we may confess to attending performances mostly in order to play a role in what guy debord called “the society of the spectacleâ€; that is to say, we participate in a surface-level experience where the veneer becomes, for us, the core of the event and thereby consumes the artist. This voyeuristic mood is particularly manifest in our fascination with outsider artists, a diverse label applied so widely as to include the reclusive jandek (who almost never performs and shies from publicity) to the late wesley willis, an electronic artist diagnosed with schizophrenia. 1 whether artists acquire the label outsider contemporaneously or ex post facto bears upon their treatment and how we may consume their art. The work of james hampton, a janitor-gone-visual-artist, was discovered posthumously, so his elaborate altar of garbage was dealt with purely as a memory—there was no spectacle for an audience to misuse and fetishize. In contrast, singer-songwriters daniel johnston and david liebe hart are currently pursuing their art as outsider artists and are thus all the more susceptible to the effects of spectacle and voyeurism. Here, i will tackle the consequences of johnston and hart being labeled outsider artists by captive audiences.

Listen up and i’ll tell a story about an artist growing old i got to know daniel johnston essentially through his 1982 song the story of an artist. At the time, i didn’t know anything about the artist behind the gloomy lyrics and the mourning piano sounds. After watching the ‘the devil and daniel johnston’, a documentary which takes us on a trip into his genius mind, and after digging through his whole discography, those lyrics from 1982 seem as prophetic as ever. As a singer songwriter, his influence is unmeasurable. As an artist, it’s a realistic hope that jeremiah and the space ducks will live forever.
The johnstons have a two-car garage. On one side is the family car and on the other is daniel’s studio. The walls are covered with photos, paintings, and clippings: the beatles, star wars, king kong, godzilla, batman, the monkees, captain america, anonymous fifties pinup girls, marilyn monroe. There’s a photo of bill and mabel in there, as well as some of daniel’s album art. Shelves hold armies of toy dinosaurs, little dolls, little beatles. There’s an old piano against the wall and a table on which sit a boom box, a turntable, an ashtray, and a couple of cups of fresh cola, with no ice. On a shelf are more than a dozen notebooks filled with songs; on the piano are cluttered heaps of cheap cassettes. There’s also a microphone on a stand and a little marshall amp. There’s a rhyming dictionary and a bible. The rug on the floor is moist with grime.

Le volume courbe, aka charlotte marionneau, will release new ep fourteen years this friday. The ep features a cover of daniel johnston's "mind contorted," performed as a duet with the specials' terry hall and also features guitar from noel gallagher. It's a lovely cover, gentle and acoustic with gallagher's lightly psychedelic playing woven throughout. Charlotte and terry's voices sound great together.
1 june 2006 | by roland-104 – see all my reviews biodoc about daniel johnston, a multitalented man, a compulsively prolific cartoon artist, song writer and performer, whose bipolar disorder and drug abuse led to episodes of severe mental illness and destructive behaviors, beginning in his early 20s, in the 1980s, problems that stifled his career for many years, until consistent psychiatric care and kindly parental oversight effected a more stable course for him more recently. Now approaching age 45, johnston has made a comeback of sorts, reaching a level of artistic self control and productivity that has swept him toward unprecedented recognition.
In february 2012, lipscomb university hosted an art exhibition and a concert by the late, great daniel johnston , who died on sept. 11 following years of failing health and struggles with mental illness. I visited the exhibition, called is and always wars, a number of times and saw johnston perform a live set with a collection of student musicians at the show's reception. Fans of the artist, and nashvillians who caught the show, won't be surprised if i say the art and music were startling and magical — they were. But my favorite memory, and the first thing that came to mind when i heard about johnston's passing, was a particular moment in the show when a beaming johnston introduced "true love will find you in the end" by saying, "this is my christmas wish for you. " it was just a friday in february, back in 2012, but johnston managed to make that night strangely sacred.
As he had the opportunity to release his music wider, johnston developed a devoted cult following that included major names in music, from kurt cobain to tom waits to beck. Johnston struggled with mental health issues throughout his life, and an organization "inspiring new conversations around mental health issues" called "the hi, how are you project" was founded by gimbel and courtney blanton with the support of daniel johnston and his family. The project is named for one of johnston's albums.
Conor oberst praised the music and art of daniel johnston and remembered the unique spirit of the late outsider folk hero, who died wednesday of natural causes at the age of 58. Oberst said he was “lucky enough†to have played several shows with johnston over the past two decades, but noted that prior to those gigs many people warned him that johnston might “act ‘crazy’ or ‘off’ or something. †but, oberst said, he never encountered that side of johnston.

It’s a level some artists strive to hit and others dread. "sounds like it’d be used in an apple commercial" is nearly its own genre. And one that acclaimed, beloved, local "hi, how are you" artist daniel johnston now belongs to. Johnston’s song "story of an artist" is included in a new apple campaign that launched thursday featuring the tagline "behind the mac. ".
Daniel johnston occupies an interesting place in popular culture. He became widely known from a t-shirt kurt cobain wore a lot in public in 1992, but had been plying his trade in the american indie music scene for about a decade by then. Releasing his mainly home recorded tapes (often with personalised, individually drawn artwork for each copy) into a listening public that was, by turns, enthralled (for the naive, songwriterly talent, the sincerity and awkward, insecure charm) or put off (by the heart-on-sleeveness, by the unabashed sentimentality), johnston had attained a level of minor fame even before cobain's endorsement. Mtv had showcased his raw talent, sonic youth had brought him to new york, and the indie rock community embraced the man, by and large, for his unique voice.
Listening to daniel johnston is a lot like playing a game of fill in the blanks. The core melodies and the song's basic structure are there, and so too is johnston's passion – be it for laurie, alongside casper the ghost and joe the boxer, or against satan. But, if you listen closely to johnston's ramshackle lo-fi recordings, lovingly released on dubbed cassettes, you can hear beatles-level ear-worms and, if you listen closer, still, a symphony. It's all there; you just have to seize it. Even posthumously, that remains part of the wonder of the "pure" yet disturbed king of outsider art: he created music so primal and so full of bumps and cracks (and tape hiss) but tunes that also were tenderly composed and bizarrely pristine.
Daniel johnston - the story of an artist - youtube.
In remembrance of daniel johnston (1961 - 2019) i think a major reason why we all enjoy music so much is because of how every song can hold a personal meaning for every individual that listens to it. The best part? the emotions aren’t limited to the lyrics. When it comes to the story of an artist by daniel johnston, i believe the beauty lies in both the performance of the song and the lyrics. Daniel, according to quite a few followers, has been known to provide both complexity and simplicity, all at once. With simple words and relatively straightforward music, the meaning you create out of the performance is essentially what’s capable of leaving you with your thoughts.
The story of daniel johnston has been well documented, which makes it tough to remember that there was a time ― almost the entire '80s ― when he was a complete unknown whose homemade cassettes were passed from convert to soon-to-be-convert. The six cds in this box set gather together his first half-dozen cassettes, originally recorded between 1980 and 1983, when johnston was in his early 20s. While these represent the earliest window into johnston's world, they're difficult to listen to without trying to contextualize, which removes a bit of the wonder of hearing these songs for the first time. And some of these tracks are quite remarkable, while others are not. The problem is the volume of material ― 131 songs is an awful lot of early daniel johnston to take, even in multiple sittings ― despite what this collection represents. The first two discs (songs of pain and don't be scared) are by far the best and each subsequent cd has less listenable, let alone essential, material. Add the quality of the some of the recordings ― done on a cheap boom box ― and this becomes for completists only. However, with some careful editing, it could make for remarkable double cd.
“listen up and i’ll tell a story/about an artist growing old/some would try for fame and glory/others just like to watch the world. †these are the famous lyrics from “the story of an artist†written by daniel johnston in 1982. Now considerably older, much like the artist he once wrote about, the elder statesman of cracked geniuses returns with the space ducks soundtrack, yet another chapter in johnston’s bizarre discography, which finds the artist comfortably growing old and apparently having a lot fun along the way.
