In seagrove, nc, daniel johnston grew up in a farming family but found influence in the local pottery community. He has apprenticed in the leach, cardew, and hewitt school of making pots. For nearly fifteen years he has devoted his time to understanding the many traditions of his craft. He states, “i do not try to control my materials, rather i try to understand them. †johnston has practiced utilizing local materials and firing large wood-burning kilns in locations such as england and thailand. During his time in northeast thailand in the village of phon bok, he worked with thai potters producing big utilitarian jars with the intention of introducing a south-east asian influence into traditional nc pottery. In the ten years since, johnston established his personal pottery studio and kiln in seagrove, nc where he continues to reside.
Much has been written about the music of daniel johnston. Daniel is one of the greatest songwriters of this generation. Daniel’s been playing his intensely unique songs since he was a young teenager and garnering fans all over the world, including such notables as kurt cobain, david bowie, pete townshend, matt groening (creator of “the simpsonsâ€), jad fair, lou reed and maureen tucker.

Hello daniel johnston fans. I'm sorry, but i don't really agree that this is definitive account of daniel's life. You see, i have been a friend of "danny's" for most of his life and believe the early portion of tarssa's account is bogus. I know i'll get alot of "this review didn't help" but who cares. I lived it with danny. I visited him when he was in weston state hospital in weston, west virginia; i picked him up from his home in new cumberland, wv and brought him into my home to listen to his troubled times during manic as well as depressive stages, i was there when his medicine wouldn't work, i was there when his parents, bill and mabel, needed someone to talk too, i was there when danny decided to start recording again and dug out my bass to play along, i was there when we practice in bill and mabel johnston's basement preparing for "artistic vice", and i am still here when danny calls from texas at least twice a week. Don't label bill and mabel johnston as religous zealots. They are good and honest, god fearing people and have raised danny the best they could. Yes, danny had his moments of fuzzy recollection, and yes he didn't always get along with his parents, but they do love him and danny loves them. I love him too, and am still waiting for a "definitive" auto-biography. This one isn't it.

His death was confirmed to npr by his brother, dick johnston, who said that daniel had just been released on tuesday from a hospital, where he had been treated for kidney issues. Dick johnston said that tuesday night, daniel had seemed well, but he was found dead at his home in waller, texas, near houston, wednesday morning. He was 58 years old.

Daniel's early albums are very hard to find in a complete package like this with great artwork and music is legendary and incredible obviously. Its worth every penny. You get more value for your buck to purchase the individual reissues of "yip jump music, 1990, artistic vice, hi how you/continued story" though on high wire music or from daniel's website or amazon which has them for a steal. Those reissues were from 2006 or that time period. All are incredible in their own way and have superb and in some cases better packaging and sound quality overall then this box set due to them to recreating the original cassettes with other goodies like posters with complete lyrics. Try to get this box set in the 60-70$ range i think it way overpriced even for the scarcity of these titles in the box.

Of course, as this documentary points out, none of us ever had to actually live with a van gogh or a lord byron and deal with the real world consequences of what went on in their heads.
In 1988 homestead records issued johnston’s first recordings on vinyl with the re-release of hi, how are you. Another powerful statement, johnston’s songwriting had become more acute and focused, combining resignatory romance narratives with spiteful attacks on former employers. It also included the memorable line: ‘i guess i lean toward the excessive/but that’s just the way it is when you’re a manic depressive’, which gave some indication of the artist’s state of mind during its recording. The double set yip/jump music was performed entirely on chord organ, and included eulogies to the beatles, danny of danny and the juniors and cartoon character caspar the ghost in addition to god. Both retired boxer and respect were excellent collections, including typically left-field compositions such as ‘i’ll do anything but break dance for ya, darling’ and ‘just like a widow’, as well as a cover version of ‘heartbreak hotel’ which managed to sound both offbeat and authentic. 1985’s continued story featured contributions from bill anderson and rick morgan to acidic songs such as ‘ain’t no woman gonna make a george jones outta me’ and a cover version of ‘i saw her standing there’. Though his collaboration with jad fair was not entirely successful, he subsequently secured a new recording contract with kramer’s shimmy-disc label. Despite guest appearances with sonic youth among others, his two albums for the label in the early 90s lacked something of the incisiveness of old.
Johnston was always happy to lay his heart on the ground for you to get a better look. ‘story of an artist’ is a testament to that fact as one of his earliest recordings offers more than most can muster in their career. An autobiographical prophecy, johnston puts his inner troubles in the shop window for all to see on this song. With it, johnston staked a claim in ’82 to be the hidden gem we were all waiting for.

On the fifty-six-year-old singer-songwriter and visual artist daniel johnston’s current tour, which is being advertised (perhaps misleadingly) as his last ever, there are no opening bands. Instead, the audience sits for “the devil and daniel johnston,†jeff feuerzeig’s full-length documentary, from 2005, on johnston’s life, artistic output, and painful struggles with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, for which he has been.
In the devil and daniel johnston, jeff feuerzeig gives us a rare glimpse into the tortured mind of just such brilliant artist by effectively combining interviews from those who have known daniel johnston best with johnston's own internal monologue. Feuerzeig achieves the latter because, apart from recording hundreds of songs on cassette tapes, daniel recorded much of his life; from his mother screaming at him as a teenager to his arrest by park officials for painting jesus fish on the statue of liberty to johnston reading aloud about his own mental illness from the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders.

Daniel johnston was one of the best known "outsider" musicians, artists whose performances lack professionalism, but are interesting in their authenticity and oddness. In johnston's case his mental instability stemmed from schizophrenia and manic depression, which occasionally affected his performances, tours as well as his and other people's safety. Yet compared with many amateur musicians he was actually a very capable guitarist and pianist. His lyrics are touching and he has an ear for writing catchy melodies. It explains why he was one of the few to make a career out of it. Johnston gained a cult following in the 1980s, which grew significantly over the decades. Many alternative musicians and rock bands have praised him and covered his work. Along with lucia pamela johnston is also one of two outsider musicians who once made a comic book. Most were scribbled inside his personal diaries, but in 2012 he published a full-length comic book: 'space ducks'.

Jeff tartakov went to visit daniel johnston at the austin state hospital just before christmas, 1986. It was the first time johnston had been committed, and the social worker in charge of the case was relieved to see tartakov, johnston’s friend and manager. Here was a patient they knew nothing about: possibly schizophrenic, possibly manic depressive, definitely psychotic. And the worst part was that he seemed to be suffering two terrible delusions. The first was that on christmas day the military would take over the country. The second was that he had to get out of the hospital soon because the next sunday he was scheduled to appear on mtv. The social worker turned to tarkatov for help. Tarkatov hesitated and said he didn’t know about the first, but the second was true.
